Cold Fusion Bonded Built-Up Roof System

Area:

600 m2

Description:

The original asphalt roof of Kings Ford Junior School was leaking and a new waterproofing system was required, with the addition of insulation so that the school could meet current building regulations. However, the exterior detailing to the original roof had been painted white, giving the roof a distinctive appearance, and the client did not want the addition of insulation to alter this appearance. Furthermore the budget would not allow for all roof areas to be completed so the works needed to be phased over two years.

Acclaim Contracts tendered a Cold Fusion Bonded Built-Up Roofing System from Liquid Plastics alongside the standard Essex County Council 10 year performance felt specification. The Liquid Plastics' specification came out on top and was applied with 100mm Decotherm insulation and a Decothane Omega 15 waterproof ‘cap sheet'. The main roof was coated with Steel Grey Decothane and the perimeter details were re-coated with white. The concrete stairs cast onto the roof to provide a fire escape, were protected with Oxide Red Decothane incorporating anti-slip grit.

The Liquid Plastics' system was chosen because the colours could be selected to reduce the visual impacts of the works and the insulation could easily be set back from the edge, preventing any major change to the appearance without hugely impacting the cost of the project. The work could also be split into two phases and tendered separately over two years, however the client would still receive a single point guarantee for materials and labour under the Liquid Plastics' Quality Assured Contractors Programme. Once installed the complete system will remain waterproof for at least 15 years, and was seen to be the most cost effective solution for the school.
